Set the Navigation Tree
Product selection determines which products from your Akeneo PIM appear in a portfolio. You control this through two mechanisms: product filters, which let you narrow down products based on attribute values, and the navigation tree.
The Navigation tree determines which category tree of your PIM is used for navigation in the portfolio. It defines the "map" of your showroom based on your PIM category tree.

To choose which category tree to use for you user navigation:
- Go to Admin > Portfolios and click on the portfolio you want to configure.
- In the left sidebar, click on Navigation.
- You will see a list of available category trees from your PIM. Each row shows a category tree with a radio button.
- Select the category you want to use as the root for this portfolio. You have two options:
- Root category (all products) — Select the top-level option to include the entire category tree. All products in the catalog will be navigable. We don't recommend that option.
- A specific category tree — Select a category tree to limit the portfolio to only that branch. End users will only see the subcategories and products within that category tree.
- Click Save to apply your changes.

Set the Navigation filters
When an end user opens a portfolio's product gallery, the filters you configure here appear as refinement options. Users can combine multiple filters to drill down to specific products. For example, a user could filter by Family, then narrow further by a Color attribute and a Size attribute, all in a few clicks.
Supported Attribute Types
Not all attribute types can be used as navigation filters. The following Akeneo PIM attribute types are supported:
- Simple select
- Multi select
- Boolean (yes/no)
- Metric (measurement)
- Price
- Number
- Reference entity
- Reference entity collection
- Family (a built-in system filter, always available)
Text, textarea, image, file, and date attributes cannot be used as navigation filters.
Configure Navigation Filters
- Go to Admin > Portfolios and click on the portfolio you want to configure.
- In the left sidebar, click on Navigation Filters.
- Browse the list of available attributes. Each row displays the attribute label, code, attribute group, and type.
- Use the search bar at the top to find a specific attribute by name.
- Check the box next to each attribute you want to enable as a filter. There is a maximum number of filters you can select per portfolio.
- To remove a filter, uncheck the box next to it.
- Click Save to apply your changes.

The Family Filter
The Family filter is a special system filter that appears at the top of the attribute list. It lets end users filter products by their product family as defined in the Akeneo PIM. You do not need to add "family" to your attribute selection for it to be available here.
What end users see
Once you save your filter configuration, end users browsing the product gallery can use these filters to refine the displayed products. The filters appear as interactive controls (checkboxes for multi-select attributes, toggles for boolean attributes, and so on) that allow users to combine criteria and quickly find the products they need.
