AI Configurations for Auto-Tagging

Summary

To get the most value from this article, we recommend first reading the AI Configurations Overview to understand how AI Configurations work in Akeneo PIM.

Overview

Auto-tagging AI Configurations provide a way to control how Akeneo's AI automatically generates tags for your asset images. Rather than relying on default tagging behavior, you can create reusable configurations that define which types of tags to include or exclude based on your business needs.

When you enable auto-tagging for an asset family, Akeneo's AI analyzes image content and automatically applies relevant tags—saving time and maintaining consistency across your entire asset library. By adding an AI Configuration, you can customize this behavior with specific instructions, such as excluding brand names or focusing on particular attributes like materials and colors.

Where to Access Auto-Tagging Configurations

Auto-tagging configurations are managed in Settings → AI Configurations. Once created, you apply them to specific asset families via Settings → Asset families → Properties.

How Auto-Tagging Works

When auto-tagging is enabled for an asset family, Akeneo's AI analyzes uploaded images and automatically generates relevant tags based on visual content. If an AI Configuration is selected, the AI follows your custom instructions when determining which tags to apply. Tags are stored in the asset family's auto-tagging attribute, where they can be reviewed and edited if needed.

What Comprises an Auto-Tagging Configuration

An auto-tagging AI Configuration contains two main components:

1. General Information

Basic identifiers including a label for easy recognition, a unique code, and an enabled/disabled toggle. When creating an auto-tagging configuration, you'll select Auto-tagging as the type.

2. Instruction Prompt

The instruction prompt defines how the AI generates tags. This is where you specify tagging behavior such as:

  • Exclusions: Tags to avoid (e.g., brand names, logos, visible text)
  • Focus areas: Specific attributes to emphasize (e.g., materials, colors, product categories)
  • Formatting preferences: Tag structure and naming conventions

Example instruction:

Generate descriptive tags focusing on product category, materials, and colors.
Exclude brand names and trademarks. Use lowercase, singular form.

Well-designed prompts lead to more consistent tagging results across your asset library.

Applying Configurations to Asset Families

To enable auto-tagging for an asset family:

  1. Navigate to the asset family's Properties tab
  2. Toggle auto-tagging on
  3. Select an AI Configuration from the dropdown (optional)
  4. Save your changes

If no configuration is selected, Akeneo uses default tagging behavior. Your asset family must have an auto-tagging attribute where generated tags will be stored.

Why Use AI Configurations for Auto-Tagging?

AI Configurations help you get the most value from auto-tagging by providing:

Consistency Centralized instructions ensure uniform tagging standards across your entire asset library. Instead of manually defining rules for each asset family, create one configuration and reuse it wherever needed.

Customization Control which tags are generated to match your business requirements. Exclude irrelevant tags like brand names, focus on specific attributes, or enforce naming conventions that align with your taxonomy.

Scalability Once you've tested and validated a configuration, apply it to automatically tag hundreds or thousands of assets—maintaining quality while eliminating manual effort.

Ease of Maintenance Update your tagging logic in one place and it automatically applies wherever the configuration is used. No need to modify settings across multiple asset families.

Important Considerations

  • Image quality impacts results: Higher-quality images produce more accurate tags
  • AI configurations are optional: Auto-tagging works without a configuration, using default behavior
  • One auto-tagging attribute per family: Each asset family supports a single auto-tagging attribute
  • Tags are AI suggestions: Review and validate generated tags for critical business terminology
  • Test before broad deployment: Validate configuration behavior with sample assets before applying across your catalog

Next Steps

Now that you understand how auto-tagging AI Configurations work, you're ready to:

  • Create your first auto-tagging configuration in Settings → AI Configurations
  • Apply it to an asset family to start automatically tagging assets
  • Review AI Config Considerations and Limitations to understand constraints and best practices
