Media mapping
This section provides an overview of media mapping in the Akeneo App for Shopify.
Media
Shopify media refers to the collection of visual assets, such as images, videos, and 3D models, that are associated with products in a Shopify store. These media files play a crucial role in showcasing products and providing customers with a visual representation of what they can expect to receive.
List of Akeneo attributes compatible with Shopify media

Please be aware that Shopify has a strict limitation of one image per variant. If you map an asset collection containing multiple assets at the variant level, the first asset will be used as the variant image and the remaining assets will be added to the product media gallery. You can also work around this by using file metafields to add multiple images at the variant level (see documentation).
Note: You can map up to 5 asset collections. An extended limit of 50 is available as an option: it is disabled by default and can be enabled on request to our support team.
How to map media?
Image attribute
- In the Products tab (or Products with variants or Combined Listings tab), click on EDIT MEDIA MAPPING.
- Now, choose Images as a Media source.
- You can now map an image attribute.
- Click on Save mapping.
It is not possible to map a mix of images and asset collections.
Asset collection
- In the Products tab (or Products with variants or Combined Listings tab), click on EDIT MEDIA MAPPING.
- Now, choose Asset collections as a Media source.
- You can now map an asset collection.
- Select an asset attribute - media in the asset family related to your asset collection to define media to synchronize.
- Select an asset attribute - alt-text in the asset family related to your asset collection to define media alt-text.
- Click on Save mapping.
It is not possible to map a mix of images and asset collections.
An asset collection can be mapped multiple times with different asset attributes - media in the metafield mapping. Each combination (asset collection + asset attribute - media) generates a separate file metafield.
Please note that alt-texts are only enabled for asset collections.
Please note that it is possible to re-order your media. To do this, select your media - click on the icon with three stripes - and drag the attribute to the desired position.
