Step 1: Set up product discovery
Product discovery makes your products eligible for agentic storefronts and AI channels. Shopify owns the setup steps.
Follow Shopify’s product discovery setup
Complete Shopify’s Step 1 tasks:
- Add your products to Shopify Catalog (performed by the Akeneo App for Shopify during product sync)
- Review or edit your store details
- Add store policies
- Add your existing online store domain to your Shopify admin
- Manage your FAQs in the Shopify Knowledge Base app (optional)
- Group related products (optional)
What the Akeneo App for Shopify does for Shopify Catalog
The app creates products in Shopify Admin as part of the sync. Creating products in Shopify Admin contributes to making products eligible for Shopify Catalog (as long as your store and products meet Shopify’s requirements).
Step 2: Configure your checkout experience
Checkout configuration is required so customers can complete purchases when shopping in AI channels.
Follow Shopify’s checkout setup
Use Shopify’s guide for the complete steps:
- Set up a payment provider
- Configure your shipping settings
- Configure your taxes
- Add a custom domain to your checkout (optional)
- Configure your store discounts (optional)
Step 3: Set up order management
Orders placed through agentic storefronts are managed from Shopify. Follow Shopify’s documentation for the complete setup steps: Set up order management.
Step 4: Activate AI channels in Shopify
After completing product discovery, checkout configuration, and order management setup, you can activate agentic storefronts and start selling through AI channels.
To opt in or out, follow Shopify’s steps: Opt in or out of agentic storefronts.
Step 5: Configure the Akeneo App for Shopify
After Shopify prerequisites are complete, configure the Akeneo App for Shopify in Akeneo PIM.
Connect and open the app
Use Akeneo’s setup instructions to connect or open the Akeneo App for Shopify: Configuration setup.
Set your store configuration
In the Akeneo App for Shopify, go to Configuration and define your store configuration.
Follow Akeneo’s documentation for the exact fields and constraints (locale, channel, currency, and optional settings): Setting up Store Configuration.
Required and recommended data for the Agentic plan
To sell on agentic storefronts, your products must meet Shopify Catalog requirements, plus additional Agentic plan requirements.
Required fields in the mapping (Agentic plan)
To make your products eligible for distribution through Shopify Catalog and AI channels, make sure your mapping to Shopify includes at least the following fields.
- Title
- Description
- Images
- Price
- External product URL (external URL standard metafield): Shopify requires an external product URL for each product that links to the product listing on your existing online store, so checkout can be completed.
For Shopify’s requirement definition, see: Shopify: Setting up agentic storefronts for stores on the Agentic plan.
Recommended fields
The following fields are not strictly required, but they improve product quality and reduce the risk of issues with checkout, shipping, and returns.
- Inventory quantity: zero inventory can exclude a product from AI recommendations.
- Weight: required if you use weight-based shipping rates.
- Compare-at price
- Product type
- HS code
- Barcode
- SEO title
- SEO description
